Oyster Gardening at SSA
Published on: 10/17/2017
SSA will have a new set of Oyster Gardens this month.  The initial set of gardens will be donated and maintained by a member of the Facilities Committee as part of the Landscape sub-committee.  The club has had these oyster gardens in the past but in recent years has not had volunteers to maintain this environmentally friendly program.  This is a great way to expand on our efforts to support SSA’s mission statement: “TO cooperate with and participate in the activities of the various community organizations and civic associations dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the Severn River area.”
The oyster gardens are provided as part of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Oyster Restoration program.  Volunteer gardeners maintain the oyster gardens through the winter and spring and return the mature oysters to the CBF to be planted on oyster reefs in June where they can continue to grow and filter the waters of our rivers and bay.  Maintaining the oyster

SSA's First Floating Garden has arrived
Published on: 9/5/2017
SSA has it’s first floating garden thanks to the generous donation of the Snipe Fleet. The floating garden was installed in the open corner of the middle basin in an effort to mitigate the environmental impact of the runoff from the yard.  This is an environmentally friendly effort and in support of SSA’s mission statement: “TO cooperate with and participate in the activities of the various community organizations and civic associations dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the Severn River area.”
These gardens were developed as part of the Magothy River Association and have been popping up on the Magothy and Severn River and provide natural filtration and a habitat for local wildlife. The roots of these shoreline plants grow downward into the water during spring and summer, acting like filtering straws to improve water clarity and absorb excess nutrients caused by runoff. The plants help stave off deadly algae blooms associated with an overabundance

Oct 27-29: The J-24 fleet is looking for a few Club members who would be willing to house an out-of-town J-24 team for the upcoming J-24 East Coast Championship Fri. Oct. 27 - Sun. Oct. 29. We already have two teams that are staying with Club members and we have a number of additional requests from out-of-town boats. Published on: 2/14/2017
SSA has posted the after-action report describing the events of December 18, 2016, when a strong gust front affected the standard Sunday-afternoon Laser and Laser Radial frostbite series. Thanks to all of the sailors, race committee members, and other SSA members who contributed to the report, and who are already implementing some lessons learned from the day to raise the bar on safety at SSA.
SSA Laser Frostbite Weather Event, December 18, 2016
Published on: 12/20/2016
We want to thank everyone for their concern for the safety of our sailors during and after the events of Sunday, December 18. The most important highlight is that all of 22 sailors returned to shore safely within roughly a half hour of the sudden onset of the 40+ knot winds, and there were no injuries. Each of the sailors competing was wearing the required dry-suit or full wetsuit, and a personal flotation device. During the rescue effort, 10 boats were left out on the Severn River; all had been recovered by 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20.

SSA Racing

Most weekends--and many weeknights--around the year, there's some sort of one-design racing happening out of Severn Sailing Association. Check out the calendar to see what's going on these days!

SSA Junior Program

SSA runs a year-round program to develop skills and a lifelong love of sailing in our younger sailors. A summer program and fall and spring high school sailing programs are just the tip of the iceberg.
